Week 4 (9/23-9/27)

Hello Delaney Families,

It's hard to believe but almost a month of school is already behind us.Where did September go?

This week's blog is filled with news and important dates for upcoming events.  Please enjoy.

Summer Reading Program - Closing Ceremonies

Students in grades K-6 celebrated the outstanding percentage of students who successfully completed the Summer Reading requirements.

In the Delaney School, our first grade students led the way with 92% participation, followed by grade three at 91% and grade two with 81%.  Our brand new kindergarten students showed their love for reading with more than two thirds of the grade level enjoying some great books over the summer months.

Great job boys and girls!  Thank you to all parents/families/teachers who helped to support this important program.

MCAS 2013 parent letters were mailed out on Friday, September 27th.  Please be on the lookout for these mailings which will include ELA & Math scores for students in grade 3-6 who took the MCAS last year.

WhenThursday, October 3rd @7:00 P.M.
Where: McMorrow Field (behind Roderick School)
Rain Date:  Friday, October 4th @7:00 P.M.

Our school will host Grandparent's/Special Person's day on Thursday, October 17, 2013.  Buses will be available beginning at 8:30 AM from Luciano’s at Lake Pearl Park to the Delaney/ Roderick School bus circle.  Grandparents/Special People are welcome to visit classrooms between 9:30 AM and 10:30 AM.  We ask that all guests sign in with a PTO volunteer before moving throughout the buildings.  Buses will return visitors to Luciano’s at Lake Pearl Park starting at 10:30 AM.  Although there will be volunteers to assist on this day, it will be helpful for guests to know their school designation and child’s teacher’s name before arriving at the school. We hope that you can join us on this very special day.

DECA Teddy Bear Drive

Students from the King Philip DECA program are participating in a Public Relations Project to support the children and families affected by Pediatric Cancer. From September 23rd to October 4th, bins will be set up in the Delaney School, King Philip High School and Middle School, and the Fiske Libary. DECA students are working to collect NEW (used ones cannot be accepted) Teddy Bears to donate to Boston Children's Hospital.

Thank you in advance for your help.

Week 3 (9/16-9/20)

Hello Delaney Families,
It's been a busy week here at the Delaney!  Open House was very successful and it was great to see all of you in attendance.  On behalf of the entire Delaney staff, we would like to thank you for coming and we look forward to working with you all throughout the school year.

This week, several of our classes viewed  "Alexander, The Elephant Who Couldn't Eat Peanuts".  This educational video helps to introduce some basis information regarding food allergies and reinforces the importance of  not sharing food and being mindful of individual differences.  This video is a small part of our ongoing efforts to keep all Delaney students safe and healthy.  For more information, please feel free to contact our school nurses

This week a KidStuff Coupon Book was sent home with one child per family.  If you wish to purchase the book, please return
$25 in the envelope provided.  If you do not wish to purchase, please return the book with your child to their teacher.
Our PTO earns at least 50% or more profit from the sale of these books.  Use just a few coupons and save more than the cost of the book!

This is the PTO's main fundraiser this Fall!  Thank you for your support! E-mail wrenthampto@gmail.com with questions.

Positive Referrals

Congratulations to the following student for receiving a Positive Referral this week!  This second grader helped a new kindergarten student who had left her backpack on the school bus.  Great job!

At our September Faculty meeting, the Delaney and Roderick School teachers were fortunate to have Kym Meyer, Educational Audiologist/Teacher from the Outreach Partnership Program at the Learning Center for the Deaf,  present on the topic of Students with Hearing Loss in the Public Schools.  The information shared was both enlightening and extremely beneficial.

Something to think about...
At the end of each term, we will be holding a Principals' Coffee. Typically these gatherings last approximately an hour with a prescribed topic followed by open discussion.  Principals' Coffees are held at 8:30 a.m. on a Friday (the first one is scheduled for November 8th) in the Vogel Auditorium.  Mr. Grenham and I are always looking for topics that are of interest to our families.  If you have any ideas or suggestions, please let me know. Thank you in advance.

Thank you for reading.
Have a great weekend!

Sincerely,
Melissa D. Peterson
