Week 18 (January 6 - 10)

Hello Delaney School Families!

At the end of our first full week of 2014, we're back into the swing of things!  It was a very chilly week with many days of inside recess and we're certainly looking forward to some of the higher temperatures that the forecast says are coming our way!

As a reminder, we use 20 degrees as our cut off mark for outside recess.  We look at the actual temperature as well as the "feels like" temperature with the wind chill.  As long as the temperature is above 20 degrees with the windchill, the kids will have outside recess barring any icy conditions that would make the playgrounds unsafe.  Please keep this in mind when sending your child to school and be sure to send the proper clothing.  Thank you in advance!

Please mark your calendars for the following dates:
January 15—A Night of the Arts (Roderick School students) —5:00– 6:45 PM
January 15—Advanced Band Winter Concert —7:00 PM
January 24—Principals’ Coffee
January 20—No School—Martin Luther King Day
January 24—Term II Ends
January 24—School Spirit Day
January 27—Half Year Special Switch Begins

***Please note...there have been some inquiries as to whether there will be school on Tuesday, January 21st.  Yes! We will be in school on January 21st.  In other years, staff members participated in a professional development day on the day following Martin Luther King Day.  This year we held that professional development day prior to the start of school so students will have school on Tuesday.***

On January 27th, students in Transitional Kindergarten will be moving from half days to full days.  In addition, this is also the mid-year switch for half year specials.  Delaney students will complete their time with Mrs. Drake in health during the week of January 20th and begin art classes with Mrs. Lovely starting on January 27th.

Grade Two Parent Math Night
On Wednesday, January 22nd from 6:30 -7:15 p.m. Dr. John Ribeiro, math consultant and the grade two teachers will be hosting a parent night in the Vogel Auditorium.  Parents are encouraged to come learn about Grade 2 Common Core math standards and explore various way to add and subtract based on current teaching methodologies.  We hope to see as many second grade parents as possible as this is a fantastic way to gain a better understanding of current math standards and to be able to most effectively assist your child at home.

School Council Meeting
The School Council meeting previously scheduled for January 14th at 3:00 p.m. will now be held on Tuesday, January 14th at 7:00 p.m. in the Roderick School library.  School Council members will be presenting the 2013-2016 School Improvement Plan to the members of the School Committee.  All are encouraged to attend.

Current PreK Openings
If you are interested in having your child attend the Project Blossom preschool program during this school year (2013-2014), we have a few openings.  For the two day program (Tuesdays and Thursdays) children must have turned 3 years of age by August 31, 2013.  To enroll in the three day program (Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays) children must have been 4 years old by August 31, 2013.  Please contact Toni Rando at 508-384-5430 if you are interested.

On Wednesday, February 5th, from 6:00-7:00 p.m. there will be a preschool informational night for parents of new incoming preschoolers planning to enroll in September 2014.  The evening will begin with a brief presentation in the Vogel Auditorium outlining the specifics of the Project Blossom preschool program and will conclude with a optional visit to the preschool classrooms.  Throughout this time, teachers and administrators will be available to answer your questions.  For further information regarding the informational night, preschool applications and registration and the preschool program, please visit the Wrentham website and click on the following link.

On Monday, January 13th, first graders were excited to spend time with author and illustrator David Biedrzycki.  Thanks to a generous grant from WEST, the children were able to learn about illustrating and writing books while watching Mr. Biedrzycki in action.  Kids and staff members greatly enjoyed his presentation and we are extremely grateful to WEST for allowing this opportunity.

Thank you for reading!
Have a great weekend! Go Pats!

Sincerely,
Melissa Peterson, Principal
