Weeks 26 & 27 (March 10-21)

Dear Delaney Families,

Happy Spring!!! The snow is melting and the days of indoor recess are quickly becoming a thing of the past. Yahoo!

We've had a busy couple of weeks at the Delaney and are preparing for the many upcoming activities and events that are planned for the future.  Please take a moment to read below for an update on the wonderful programs, trips, and student accomplishments that have occurred over the past two weeks.  Also, be sure to take out those calendars and add upcoming events.

Positive Referrals

Congratulations to the following students who received Positive Referrals over the past couple of weeks!

MCAS
Students in Grade 3 participated in the ELA MCAS on Tuesday and Wednesday of this week.  They worked extremely hard and should be commended for their perseverance and determination.  I'm so proud of their efforts.  Great job boys and girls!

Professional Development Day Activities
On Friday, March 14th, teachers in Grades PreK-2 met in the morning for a workshop focused on Fundations with consultant, Melissa Francis.  They spent the afternoon with Barbara Laites Collins discussing Writers' Workshop strategies.  Grades 3-6 met together for the entire day to focus on Writer's workshop with consultants Barbara Laites Collins in the morning and Holly McMackin in the afternoon.

Kindergarten Registration
Kindergarten registration was held on Friday, March 14th in the Delaney Office.  There are still openings available in all sessions.  Please help us spread the word and tell your friends and neighbors with kindergarten age children to please come to the school to sign up their child for September 2014.  As a reminder, parents must bring a copy of the child's birth certificate, most recent immunizations, and proof of residency.  Registration forms are available on our website (www.wrentham.k12.ma.us) or by clicking here.

Dental Health Presentations

On Friday, our kindergarten and first grade students attended presentations to promote dental health awareness.  Thank you to our nurses, Mrs. Richardson and Mrs. Cashman, for organizing this event and to Dental Association of Walpole for coming and sharing some great tips and information and for providing each child with a toothbrush, tube of toothpaste and dental floss to take home.

From the Delaney Nurses...
Vision and Hearing Screenings will be continuing for grades 1-3.

 Principals' Coffee
On Friday, March 28th, there will be a Principals' Coffee in the Vogel Auditorium beginning at 8:30 a.m.  The topic of discussion will be the student placement process for the 2014-2015 school year.  Parents are encouraged to attend to learn about the process in its entirety.  In addition, Mr. Grenham and I will be speaking about the parental input letters including acceptable and unacceptable input/requests.  We hope to see you there!

New Redcat FM Systems Installed
In December, WEST provided us with a grant to purchase 4 new FM systems to be used in special subject classrooms including Music, Art , Library and Health. We received and installed them this week. The Redcat FM systems not only help students with hearing loss, but those with fluctuating loss due to colds, allergies, etc... as well as auditory processing difficulties. They allow the teacher’s voice to be heard above background noise and are very beneficial to all the students. We would like to once again thank WEST for their generosity and support of the Wrentham Public Schools.

New Library Books

Mrs. Panchuk, the Roderick School Librarian, recently received a large order of books for the Delaney Library.  We are very thankful and excited for the new titles which will be arriving on the shelves shortly.

Pennies for Pitman Challenge Results

WOW!!!  Thank you to all who participated in the Pennies for Pitman challenge.  Students in grades K-6 dug into their banks and wallets and brought in a total of $1,311.67 to support Mrs. Pitman as she participates in Dancing with the Stars on behalf of the Wrentham PTO.  The competition was fierce as students filled their grade level jars silver coins and contributed pennies and paper bills to other grades to deduct from their totals.  In the end, although 2nd grade had more money in their jar: $403.63 (the most of any of the grades), it is the pennies & paper that count and 3rd grade came out on top. Congratulations to all and thank you for supporting this great cause.

 Moose Hill Field Trip
Our kindergarten students visited Moose Hill this week to learn about maple sugaring as part of their science curriculum.  Check out some of the great photos from their field trip.

Discovery Museum Field Trip
Our second graders took a trip to the Discovery Museum in Acton this week and had a spectacular time.

Wrentham History Performance
Mrs. Klenk's first grade students did an outstanding job sharing their knowledge of Wrentham history as part of the Social Studies curriculum.

Term III Spirit Day

The Roderick and Delaney Schools will have their Term III Spirit Day on Friday, March 28th.  Schools will be collecting new or gently used sports gear/supplies for children who can't afford their own. Collections will begin on Monday, March 24th and will continue through Friday, March 28th.  In addition to donating sports supplies, students are encouraged to participate in "Profession Day" on March 28th. "Profession Day" is when students dress up as what they would like to be when they grow up.  Our past two Spirit Days have been extremely successful and we hope this one continues the trend!
